Bulletproof Coffee – What Is It and Should You Drink It?

When I found myself having three different conversations about the Bulletproof Diet this past week I knew I needed to write to you all about my take.

The diet is an interesting one with lots of great arguments on both sides. It is essentially a Paleo diet that is built on lots of healthy protein and organic produce, plus high saturated fat. Dave Asprey, the author of the book, also talks a lot about keeping the diet free of toxins, which as you know I am all about, and “intermittent fasting,” which basically means adherents eat only during a certain number of hours a day– say 2pm-8pm, and then fast the rest.

A major part of the diet is Bulletproof Coffee, a blend of Bulletproof author-approved special coffee plus coconut oil and pastured butter, all blended together into a creamy drink that tastes like a latte made with totally unhealthy non-dairy creamer. Seriously, it is so good!

Bulletproof Coffee offers lots of good saturated fats that are used to keep drinkers full and satisfied during fasting times. (The author also has a line of products he sells, including an organic, toxin-free coffee, his own coconut oil blend, and some other things.)The Bulletproof Diet promises a pound a week weight loss and tremendous energy. My own experience as a coach, an eater, and a reader of research bears out that a high fat low carb diet can indeed result in better energy and nice weight loss, for a time. There are some huge caveats, though. For one, it is not sustainable for most people. It is definitely not for nursing mothers, pregnant women, or women who want to become pregnant. Or for anyone with any hormonal issues to navigate. So it turns out that intermittent fasting is NOT a good solution for women. It can result in low energy, anxiety, wrecked metabolism and hormonal issues. For these reasons, I can’t broadly recommend the diet to you. Nor can I recommend unfettered coffee consumption because I would hate to see you burn your adrenals out completely, subsisting on coffee all day.

But I can offer you a great recipe that gives you the saturated fat benefits of Bulletproof Coffee with an extra bit of collagen protein and without the jitters and shakes.  Make it with coffee and my additions (make sure to add the cardamom that mitigates the caffeine effects of coffee, according to Ayurvedic theory and corroborated by my Ayurvedic doc), or make it like this for a healthy alternative that tastes delicious:

Dandy Bulletproof, serves 1

1/2- 1 Tablespoon coconut oil (I use this one. )
1/2 -1 Tablespoon Pastured Butter (I use Kerrygold, unsalted, from Trader Joe’s)

1 Tablespoon high quality Gelatin Powder   (I use this one.)

Add ingredients to 8 ounces of almost-boiling water. Add to a blender or use an immersion blender. Blend everything (adding taste variations like a shot of vanilla extract, a drop or two of stevia, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, etc. as you like them) and mix until it’s frothy.This drink is so delicious, and the dandelion is fantastic liver detoxifying support. The gelatin gives you a good collagen boost for healthy digestion, smooth skin and strong hair. The butter gives you fat-soluble Vitamin A and D, and the coconut oil gives, among other benefits, boosted immunity and sustained energy.

You can work your way up to higher amounts of coconut oil and butter as time goes on, up to 2 tablespoons each. But be careful– coconut oil can have a laxative effect if you’re not used to it in high doses like this. So start slow. And enjoy it with some protein and veg for breakfast, not instead of breakfast.

Healthy Snacks to Eat While You Watch the World Series

So the San Francisco Giants are back in the World Series and everybody is freaking out. I’m an A’s fan, but I’ll root for any Bay Area team in the World Series. I’m also at the beginning of a seasonal detox so my snacks have to be built on real food.  And so I’ve been busy trying to come up with some tasty things that my detox clients can snack on while they watch Bumgarner & co. smoke the Royals. Following are my top five snacks to take to a World Series party. All of them are gluten-free, grain-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, and delicious.  Share them and eat them without blowing your detox plan or feeling sick and sorry in the morning.

1. Baked Zucchini Chips:  Preheat oven to 250. Slice a zucchini into thin {1/4 inch} coins. Toss with coconut oil and salt and pepper. Bake until crispy- somewhere around 45 minutes. Enjoy.

2. White Bean Dip: Great for zucchini chips, carrot sticks, flax crackers, sliced red peppers, celery, etc. Drain and rinse a regular can of white beans. Put it in the food processor and slowly add olive oil until you have a creamy base, around 1/8 of a cup.  Add 1-2 cloves of garlic, a pinch of cumin, and salt and pepper to taste.

3. Baked Garbanzo Beans: Preheat your oven to 400. Drain and rinse a can of garbanzo beans. Dry them well and toss with melted coconut oil (a couple of tablespoons) and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and cayenne (or whatever spices you like) to taste. Bake for 30-45 minutes, until golden brown and crunchy. Yummmmmm.

4. Salmon in Endive: Cut the bottom off a head of endive. Wash and dry well. Add a smudge of good quality mustard to each leaf. In a small bowl, take a can of wild salmon, drained and rinsed, and add 1/8-1/4 cup of full-fat coconut milk or enough olive oil to get a consistency you like. Add + salt and pepper to taste. Put a spoonful in each endive leaf and top with a bit of fresh dill and a few capers.

5. Bacon-wrapped Stuffed Dates: I saved this one for last since it’s basically heaven wrapped around goodness and sprinkled with love.  Take the pits out of a half pound of Medjool dates. (Dried apricots work well here too.) Put an almond and a small bit of Irish cheddar (or any other cheese you like) into each pitted date. Take a 1 lb package of organic, nitrite- and nitrate-free bacon and cut the slices across so that each slice is half length. Wrap each of  your stuffed dates with a piece of bacon and secure with a  toothpick. Put these little bits of goodness into a glass baking dish lined with foil and cook for 50 minutes to an hour, until your bacon is done.

A Hot Pot of Miso Soup

My family is sick: the husband with a sore throat, the baby with the start of a sniffle, and the kid with a glorious case of Overdoing-Just-Need-to-Stay-Home. I feel like a jersey cow for an insatiable nursling and a nursemaid with hot tea and sympathy for everyone else.

I had expected a fun holiday weekend! There were barbecues to attend and beaches to sloth on. The kiddos’ need for comfort and my husband’s need for space begin to push my buttons and soon the inner martyr in me starts up inside my head: SHE never gets to rest when I’m sick. SHE never sleeps in. SHE never gets comfort when her throat hurts.

I take a deep breath and choose, today, to not complain at my annoying family. Tweet this

…this annoying family that I love with every part of my being but who know better than anyone exactly where I keep my goat. 1-Mississippi-2 Mississipi-3, and I remember the hot Cold Care tea my husband made me two nights ago when I was feeling run-down. 4-Mississippi-5-Mississippi-6 I remember the extra sleep I got while he took the baby for endless bounces around the living room and I rested with a lavender sachet on my eyes and a Yoga Nidra meditation coming in through my earphones.

I take a few more breaths and pad into the kitchen to make my peace offering. My inner martyr keeps quiet while we eat miso soup together. It’s salty and warm and it’s good for what ails us.

Practically Paleo Chocolate-Zucchini Muffins
